Toshiba Infuses Gaming Laptops With Triple Nvidia GPUs

November 21st, 2008

Toshiba has recently empowered its flagship Qosmio series with two new gaming laptops: the Qosmio X305-Q706 and the Qosmio X305-Q708. These gaming laptops will incorporate Three GPUs in one system with the integrated GeForce 9400M and two Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS cards through SLI (Scalable Link Interface).

Nvidia is naming this triple-card solution as “Hybrid SLI” and it basically offers laptop owners the option of discrete graphics with two connected Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS cards for powerful gaming and then integrated graphics with the GeForce 9400M for lower-power usage like Windows operations.

Toshiba is offering the Qosmio X305 in two versions: the lower priced $1,999 Qosmio X305-Q706, powered by a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. It has a 320GB, 7,200rpm hard drive and the already mentioned GeForce 9400M and the two 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS cards.

For those with huge pockets, Toshiba is offering a higher-end version, the Qosmio X305-Q708 at around $4,199 with a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 quad-core processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. It has two hard drives: 128GB solid-state drive and a 320GB, 7,200rpm hard drive. And of course, it will feature the three GPUs.

Both these Qosmio X305 gaming models will have the red-flame design and both will have the 17-inch Diagonal Widescreen TruBrite? Display at 1440×900 native resolution. Plus, stereo sound with 4 Harman Kardon speakers with subwoofer.

If you can get over the fact that gaming laptops are often considered a total waste of money because you can get much better performance for a far cheaper price in a gaming Desktop PC; Toshiba may be pointing us in the right direction. Still, many gamers argue that even 3 mobile chips are not equal to their desktop cousins and if you want ultimate gaming performance go with a PC rather than a laptop.

While there’s a lot of truth to that argument, gaming laptops are catching up in performance and in price. Gaming laptops are using the latest technologies to improve performance, especially through SLI and Hybrid SLI where two or more GPUs are connected to give you a better gaming experience. Call it “Hybrid SLI” or whatever you want, but there’s no denying laptop performance has greatly improved over the last few years.

Still most high end big brand names, like Alienware, charge big prices for all that raw power and style, especially on their fully loaded machines. However, for the prudent consumer there are cheaper gaming laptops that will not break your banking account. Some of these, like the Gateway P-7811FX do offer good value for your money.

Likewise, for those who want a mobile gaming machine and is not worried about the dismal battery life, can look towards the Qosmio X305 gaming laptop series from Toshiba for a solution. It should give you the best of both world in the same laptop: maximum performance and quiet operation. In a recent press release, Carl Pinto, vice president of product development for Toshiba, stated:

“We wanted to deliver an extreme-performance gaming machine that gives gamers a complete, non-compromising system in a laptop form factor… the combination of the NVIDIA GPUs and chipset allowed us to achieve a high level of performance, quality and flexibility that our customers are asking for, at a competitive starting price of $1,999.”

Only the marketplace will decide whether these new laptops sporting three GPUs will fulfill that promise and usher in a whole new era in gaming laptops. At least now all the cards are on the table or should we say in the machine.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis

November 21st, 2008

They are small in stature but big in heart. Developed to work on farms the Pembroke Welsh Corgi retains their herding instincts but can do more than herd. “Cruiser” completed the requirements for Tracking dog, Tracking Dog Excellent” and “Variable Surface Tracking” title after having won his show championship for conformation. Proving a pretty dog can work Cruiser was the first conformation champion of any breed to earn a champion tracking title.

“Ceri” was the first Pembroke to win a master agility champion title. Corgis with proper training can be hearing dogs and work in other service capabilities.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi historically has a history that speaks of legislation and adaptation. The Romans classified dogs according to use. In the 10th century the only dogs allowed to peasants were small dogs for pest control. Shepherds were allowed to keep their dogs but they had to be mutilated but the shepherds dogs were allowed a docked tail which allowed them to work. Later taxes were charged on dogs except for those with docked tails – the Pembroke had a natural bob-tail that was an early selection trait.

The lack of a tail separates him from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the two have been maintained as separate breeds since the mid 19th century. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has gained recognition as the breed kept by Queen Elizabeth II.

Thus the corgi was a dual purpose dog – herding and pest control. This is a breed that is low set but strong. They should have enough bone for strength but not coarse. They’re bold, intelligent dogs without any shyness. The ears are stockier and their erect ears more pointed than the Cardigan.

By the standard they are 10-12 inches and fewer than 30 pounds for dogs. They have a medium length coat that is weather-resistant. They are seasonal shedders with an undercoat that can vary their appearance. Regular brushing helps the dog maintain a good coat and when they lose the heavy undercoat there will be plenty of hair for lining bird nests or composting! Apart from this shedding they require little grooming.

Low to the ground with a fox like head with dark eyes this is a dog that is more than he appears. They may be red, sable, fawn or black and tan. Like many herding breeds they may follow movement and nip at heels, which bear training away from the trait. They can be barky and a good alarm dog. Males can be aggressive with other dogs.

They need regular exercise including walks and play. They often duck and roll in play as well as avoiding kicks from larger livestock. Some can be quite possessive with toys and other treasures including children.

The long body can present problems sometimes with back issues. They are heavier muscled than some other breeds so more durable but shouldn’t be allowed to play on stairs. Regular exercise is good but watch they don’t overdo it.

There are some genetic issues that occur in the breed and should be tested for before breeding. Among these are hip dysplasia, eye problems, cancer and autoimmune system issues, sterility in males and uterine inertia during whelping. Other issues that can affect the breed include hot spots, epilepsy, glaucoma, corneal ulceration, lens luxation and progressive retinal atrophy. Breeding for health is important as generally speaking this is a healthy breed.

They’re affectionate dogs but allow people to come to them. They are highly intelligent and trainable. They are energetic but do take heavy praise of doing the right thing rather than heavy correction to keep them motivated. They are sensitive and want to please so are eager to repeat things that get praise.

The food can be an issue – in particular the amount of it. Keep them in good condition without being too thin or too heavy. You should be able to feel but not see the ribs and a good layer of covering over their rumps. Too heavy puts more stress on his spine and increases the chances of serious health problems.

Regular training and activity are needed to keep him from getting bored and creating his own entertainment which usually is less entertaining to you!

Keep him confined at home. His small size means he doesn’t stand a chance of defense either running or fighting against aggressive larger dogs. While he is active and athletic for his size there is just no way he can stand up to a dog twice or three times his size. Their basically trusting nature also leaves them open to theft and unsupervised herding dogs that learn to chase cars can find it a fatal pastime. Many corgis never meet a stranger but love and trust everyone.

Even among herding dogs there are dogs that were used different purposes. There were breeds like the border collie that were sent out into the field to gather the livestock and bring them in then there were droving breeds that drove cattle to market. The latter is reported to be where the Corgi fit in. He could run in and nip a heel then drop and roll safely out of the way to avoid getting kicked.

Those looking at herding can find understanding the difference between these two styles can save a great deal of frustration. Many get irritated when moving cattle and their herding dog circles and stands right in the gate you want them to go through – and often these are dogs that bring them to you, not driving away. On the other hand some of the drovers are less adept at getting around to stare down and turn livestock as their nature is to follow and gently guide but not as much to bring them to you.

Corgi puppies are so cute it’s especially important to steel your resolve when training and stick to discipline and boundaries. The effort that you put into training your puppy will come back to you many times over in a happy, healthy, well mannered adult corgi. One allowed to misbehave and run wild can be a destructive terror created by your lack of boundaries. Training from all owners is highly important. Selection of a stable dog from a breeder is important but training much more so as the dog lives with you.

The Pembroke Welsh corgi is a cute puppy, a loyal companion and an intelligent canine that can do a wide variety of things to help their owners. They take little care but give much back! Research, choose wisely and pick the best individual for a loyal pet that will last many years.

Shetland Sheepdogs

November 21st, 2008

A Shetland sheepdog is not a “mini-collie” but a distinct separate breed that actually has roots in the Border collie. A native of the Shetland Isles in far northern range of Scotland he was a dog developed to help on crofts, or small farms, where there wasn’t much food to be had. A small dog was needed for that reason, yet a tireless worker in all kinds of weather which gave rise to selection for a durable coat and a loyalty to their owners.

Shelties are also thieves – they’ll steal your heart slicker than any pickpocket! They are commonly sable, black and white, tri color and blue merle. They can be barkers without patience and training but are a loyal, observant dog. Their intelligence and trainability make them among the most successful obedience breeds.

The sheltie coat does require regular grooming to remain tangle free and prevent it from becoming matted. There is a double coat with an outer layer that is more harsh and straight and an undercoat that is very dense. This can help shed rain from a working standpoint and enough harshness to the coat to resist tangling. For pet dogs you must be committed to thoroughly combing a Sheltie a couple times per week. It is not advisable to shear or close cut a Sheltie’s natural coat.

From a show standard point the Sheltie is 13-16 inches tall and of course show dogs are bred for that glorious coat. Dogs over or under height can excel at herding, agility, obedience and many other tasks where intelligence and their work ethic is valued.

Some Shelties are very nervous, some very friendly and some reserved. One sheltie came to a new home at five months old and was very stand offish initially, almost timid. After a week or so his new owners noticed he was observing EVERYTHING in the household. From washing clothes to cooking dinner to hooking up speakers on the stereo the young Sheltie was observing as if taking notes on human behavior. Once he was satisfied in his mind things were fine he became a constant companion and irreplaceable part of the household. He had his little quirks and routines – he loved to be outside but let one rumble of thunder roll and he wanted inside pronto! He would patiently stand to be combed and brushed until the camera came out when he would primp and pose like the most arrogant of film stars!

Shelties are above all people dogs. They’re intensely loyal and affectionate with a high drive to please their owners. They should move as a working dog with purpose, without up and down hackney action. They are wonderful dogs for those who have a small area or need a small dog due to housing requirements. They are a big dog in a small package and often have a hero worship for the people lucky enough to own one.

There are health considerations that warrant attention in the Sheltie. Among them is hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, von Willebrands disease, dermatomyositis, collie eye anomaly, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy and Addison’s disease are among those to watch for. Many of these can be tested for including eye disease, epilepsy and hip dysplasia.

Von Willebrand’s disease is a clotting disorder – this is normally not a huge issue to have a dog get a cut but for a dog affected any surgery (including spay/neuter), birthing puppies and injuries takes on a much more serious tone. Eye and heart diseases should always be something that breeding dogs get a clean bill of health on before breeding.

Another thing that needs to be watched is a high sensitivity to Ivermectin which can send them into an overdose situation that also affects border collies and collies. This might not affect every dog, but when you’re watching a dog seizure after getting an Ivomectin dose intended to help her it is of little consolation.

Some Shelties can be sensitive to grain content in less expensive dog foods and many owners advise that a raw or real meat diet can be a good choice especially for Shelties.

The Sheltie is a breed for many reasons and will capture your heart like few others. They are intensely loyal and loving with those in the home that they choose to trust and when you get the Sheltie stamp of approval it’s a pretty incredible thing! Early socializing is recommended so the Sheltie learns to tolerate strangers even if not enjoying the interaction. When you bond with a Sheltie there is no question to anyone watching who his owner is.

Owing to his herding heritage Shelties will often chase movement. They aren’t particular if it’s ducks, sheep, children, cats or squirrels! This is a breed that LOVES to play! They’re intelligent and observant dogs that enjoy the mental puzzle of figuring things out. Some Shelties can be real “chow hounds” while others are apt to pick at their food throughout the day. If you feed raw meat there it few sights that radiate happiness more than a Sheltie with his meal! It’s not unusual for him to savor each bite as if in full appreciation of the good things in life!

An example of the Sheltie intelligence is the owner who worked from home but the telephone was in the living room while she worked in the office. Her Sheltie would get up in the morning, go outside, come in for his breakfast then head to the office door. As she answered email he settled contentedly at her feet unless the phone rang. Because she would get up to answer it – he learned on his own when the phone rang to run to the office door! Even if she didn’t hear the phone he did and would alert her to a telephone call or knock on the door.

This same Sheltie would observe everything from the normal routine of the cats to the pack order of the household. It was almost as if he was supervising and keeping things in order!

The beautiful coat of a Sheltie does require regular brushing but it’s also important to lay your hands on your Sheltie daily. Because of that coat it can be deceptive and feeling him lets you know if he’s too thin or too heavy. Some of the less active members of the breed can quickly become obese which shortens their lives and can trigger several diseases.

The Sheltie isn’t a breed for everyone. Although low maintenance the do take an owner who is sensitive to gain their confidence and yet firm enough to lead them. Their intelligence can also mean without a balance of training they can be a poor representative of dogdom due to lack of boundaries. That said, for an older couple they can be the ideal companion as they are small and smart.

One dog owner had always had border collies and took in a Sheltie who needed a home. After just a few months he absolutely had moved in and taken over the household! He gave ‘king of his domain’ a whole new definition!

Capri, A Very Glamour Italian Island

November 21st, 2008

Capri is a handsome island close to the towns of Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, Positano, and Amalfi on the western Italian coast.

The ship ride across the Gulf of Naples will take you to the port of Jetty Grande on the Isle of Capri, and from there you have several options. The Blue Cave was employed as a meeting place by couriers during the times of the Roman Empire, and was rediscovered in the 1800s.

To get to the Blue Cave , you can take a mini-bus from Anacapri, walk, or ride a ship from Pier Grande ; the ship will take about 35 mins to get to the grotto. Unless you’re on a tour that includes the cost of the boats, you may have to pay 3 times ; there is a fee for the bigger boat, one for the smaller boat, and a tip for the oarsman. If the waves are high, your trip could be cancelled, as it’s tricky to get into the cave. The cave opening is hardly plain from outside, and passengers have to lie down as the ship goes into the cavern due to the extremely low entrance.

Within the cavern there’s a strange blue light that comes up through the water ; it’s actually an amazing sight and you can take impressive pictures. If you can get the oarsman to sing an aria, you will hear an echo. You will not stay long in the cavern, as there’s only room for almost 3 boats, but the trip is worth any price to see the pretty Blue Cave.

From Pier Grande you can take the funicolare up to the Piazzetta, a square that is full of charming outside cafes, shops, and the amazing, splendid Grand Hotel Quisisana. Krupp also had the Thru Krupp built, a gated road that links Capri and the beach at Quay Piccola, and is definitely a work of art. From the gardens you’ll have a fabulous view of the Faraglioni, 3 large rocks that jut up out of the sea. One of the huge rocks has a tunnel that cuts through the bottom, and another is home to a rare sort of blue lizard.

You can get different views of the Faraglioni from varied places on the island ; good perspectives can be had from the gardens, from Quay Piccola, and from the boats that circle the isle. There is a beach and cafe, La Fontelina, that are close to the base of the Faraglioni ; you can get there by walking along the Thru Tragara or by ship.

The Roman emperor Tiberius lived on Capri from twenty-seven to 37 AD, and constructed a magnificent house there, the Villa Jovis. Though it is assumed that Tiberius built at least 12 villas on Capri, the ruins of only 3 survive, and Villa Jovis is the most intricate. You can hike up to the Villa Jovis from the Piazzetta ; it’ll take about an hour but is a reasonably straightforward walk.

Anacapri is on the western side of the island, and from Piazza Vittoria, you can take a chair lift up to the head of Mount Solara, that will take about 10-15 mins. Once at the top, you can have a superb view of Anacapri, the Gulf of Naples, the Gulf of Sorrento, and the Faraglioni. If you walk back down the mountain, that may take roughly an hour, you may pass by the small church of Santa Maria a Cetrella, and you may definitely see some handsome view.

There are handsome gardens there, extraordinary perspectives, and the tale of the villa is told in Munthe’s book, “The Story of San Michele,” which would be a good read if you intend to visit Capri. Wherever you go on the Isle of Capri you’ll have fantastic perspectives of the sea. If you want to relax on the beach or go sailing, you will adore Capri, long a favourite of the rich and famous of the planet.

How to Determine Whether to Buy a Tent or a Camper

November 21st, 2008

Camping can be a great experience. Being in the great outdoors is an exhilarating experience. Fresh air, nature and the sheer beauty of nature draw millions of people into state parks and campgrounds every year.

Camping enthusiasts everywhere are faced with a myriad of decisions when they plan a camping trip. There are so many different things to take into consideration before leaving on your big trip that it may seem like you will never get on the road.

Among the most important decision is whether to buy a tent or camper. Safe and comfortable tents are very important when you are in the woods or in a campground.

Each one has it’s own set of advantages and making an informed decision is not as easy as it may sound. There are many different shapes, sizes and styles of tents. Big, or small, there is a tent that is perfect for every camping event.

Weather plays a big factor when you are camping, and there are tents that are also specifically created to brave the elements.

If you are camping with your family, having several small tents can create anxiety especially when you have younger children camping with you. A family tent is almost like a portable home; it has many different rooms including separate bedrooms. Another feature that all tents have today are windows that can be shut with Velcro and bug netting.

When it comes to campers, you have an incredible amount of choices. RV’s are a favorite because of the space they provide. It is like a home on wheels. Most RV’s have working kitchens and bathrooms and also have electricity. A drawback to RV’s is that a special license is needed to drive one.

Another factor that you have to take into consideration when making your decision is campgrounds. You can set up a tent in just about any campground, no matter how big it is. However, with an RV, you have to find special parks in order to camp overnight, many requiring a reservation.

For those who want something smaller, pop up campers are excellent choices. They are lightweight and can be towed by any car or truck that has a hitch and work as the name indicates they pop up. Like an RV, a pop up camper offers sleeping quarters, a kitchen and in higher end models, a working bathroom. Pop up campers can sleep four to six people comfortably.

Deciding what type of camping equipment is needed depends on each individual situation. It is important to make this decision in the early planning stages of the camping trip mainly because you will be limited on space and you will have a better understanding of what to pack for your trip

A tent may provide you a view of the stars on a dark night in the woods, however a camper will offer you extra protection by being able to lock the door. A tent may provide a more rustic view of camping however an RV will allow the luxury of sleeping on a soft bed.

How to Buy Electronics Wholesale

November 21st, 2008

Are you interested in setting up a home business selling electronics online? Buying wholesale from suppliers is easier than you might think and you will save a huge percentage on retail price – leaving you a decent profit after sales. This article is a guide to the product itself, buying your merchandise and finding the correct supplier for you.

Electronics vary hugely in price world-wide and even online. Many consumers know this and are on the lookout for a bargain. If you can give them that bargain, then you stand to profit from it!

The first thing is to make sure you know your electronics. Know the difference between a plasma and an LCD screen if you’re going to stock TVs. Know to get Blu-Ray, not HD disc players. Make sure you follow the latest technologies and fashions, because electronics as an industry is constantly changing, and obsolete stock becomes worthless very quickly. As such, it is a risky industry, but one that can lead to great profits.

Decide what you are going to stock. Again, this is dependant on what you know – only sell electronics that fall into categories you keep up to date on. There is no point in selling digital cameras if you have no idea what a decent number of megapixels is for such a camera to have. You may decide to stock a small range of products with several models of each, or go for a broader range of types of product without necessarily having many of each type. The choice is yours, but there are plenty of wholesalers for all kinds of electronic goods out there. You just have to find one whose products and prices suit you.

Wholesaling has been made much easier through the use of the internet. Most wholesalers these days have internet sites through which they can advertise and showcase their wares as well as providing easy ordering and delivery services. It’s simply a matter of shopping around to find the cheapest place selling the goods you want to stock.

In the electronics business, perhaps you can get the best place to buy wholesale from is the Far East, especially China. This part of the world generally has the cheapest consumer electronics and ordering your stock from here will give you a good mark-up while still being well under retail prices thanks to your low overheads. There are good wholesalers that is a good stockist of electrical items, with everything from MP3 players to digital cameras. Similarly there are wholesaler for electronics that is a good place to buy discounted electronic goods and almost offer a wide range of devices, all exported directly from China to you, giving you huge savings compared to other retailers in your industry.. Keep an eye out for distributors that have the products you are looking for and keep looking around – it is an ever-changing industry and you shouldn’t necessarily stick with one supplier.

So there you go, your guide to finding suppliers and buying wholesale electronics.

Mitch Gleason has been a business writer for the past 15 years contributing to many business periodicals. Read some of his articles about wholesale distributor electronics and other amazing wholesale consumer electronics.

Fur Real Friends Biscuit

November 21st, 2008

Fur Real Friends Biscuit My Lovin’ Pup is absolutely one of the best Christmas toys for the 2008 season. This dog is incredibly realistic and full of fun surprises. If you are looking for that perfect gift for children ages 5 and older, this is it!

There have been many toys over the years that have claimed to be ‘realistic’ and ‘true to life.’ These toys are usually pretty disappointing with their stilted robotic movements. I was pleased to discover that Biscuit is the exception to the rule. His movements are fluid and life-like! In fact, if it weren’t for the fact that you can hear the motors he may as well be a real dog.

Since you’re looking for the most realistic dog around for your little one, you’ll also be pleased to know that its coat is life-like as well! Biscuit is a tan colored dog that looks like a lab. He’s also fun to pet and kids seems to get a kick out of stroking his fur. There is even a brush included so your little ones can brush him down if his hair gets tangled.

I was also impressed with the fact that the Fur Real Friends Biscuit is pretty much ready to go right out of the box. He will need six D-cell batteries (a small downside) and then he’s good to go. You don’t even have to be concerned that the battery compartment will be exposed, as it’s hidden under a Velcroed flap on the dog’s belly.

The best part about Biscuit is that you can command him as if he were a real dog. He responds to an impressive number of different commands. His body has sensors on it that allow him to respond to touches, tickles, and voices. There are way too many movement features to list, so here are a few of the highlights.

Biscuit will:

- Make sounds when you pet him

- Lay down when you put a hand on his back

- Sit up when you put a hand on his back when he is already laying down

- Sniff when his nose is tickled

- Chew when there is something near his mouth

- Raise his paw to shake when his paw is touched

- Flinch, blink, or sneeze when you waive something near his face

One of the biggest challenges I’ve run across when looking at this Fur Real Friends is that it can take younger children a little while to catch on to the commands. The good news is that Biscuit has a bone-shaped tag that describes the commands he knows.

Your little ones can tell Biscuit to:

- Sit

- Lie Down

- Speak

- Say, “Do you want a treat?”

Just like a real dog, Biscuit doesn’t stop when you do. He’ll entertain himself some when you’re off doing other things. I am really impressed that he can even tell when the lights come on and go off!

All in all, you really can’t go wrong with the Fur Real Friends My Lovin’ Pup Biscuit. He’s a smart, realistic dog that the whole family is sure to enjoy. That makes him one of the best gifts you can give for Christmas 2008.

A Natural Herbal Supplement Called Guggul May Help Lower Cholesterol

November 21st, 2008

Guggul is a natural herb supplement that may help lower cholesterol, yet few in the Western hemisphere know much about it. Guggul is otherwise known as the Mukul myrrh tree, and is a plant of the Burseracae family with small red or pink flowers.

It is found across central Asia over to North Africa, although is very common in the northern areas of India where the climate is more semi-arid than equatorial. Guggul does not like a lot of water and can thrive in ground where the soil has few nutrients. Its Latin name is Commiphora wightii, and it grows about 12 feet high.

It has been predominantly used in the Ayurvedic medicine of ancient India, and like many such ancient remedies and treatments, is now used in modern medicine to treat specific conditions: conditions such as some forms of heart condition, where it has been found to be able to lower your blood cholesterol levels, weight loss and some forms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

However, it has been used so successfully over the years, particularly in India, which it is now in danger of extinction and is contained in the Red Data List of the World Conservation Union that lists endangered species. So what is so special about this plant that makes it so popular? To get the answer to that we have to go back a bit in its history, although not quite as far as the two or three thousand years that it is known to have been used in traditional Hindu medicine.

The active ingredient is found in the sap of the tree, and is used to fight against obesity and other diseases that can be caused by excess weight or cholesterol, such as arthritis, obesity and atherosclerosis. Until recently it has had very little support for its claims from conventional medicine. It was in the 1960s that an ancient Sanskrit text was found that recommended guggul as a treatment for high cholesterol levels. Since that discovery, research has focused on the plant’s anti-cholesterol properties, and a great deal of evidence has been gathered supporting the claims of that ancient text.

So much so that the Indian government has approved the use of guggul for the treatment of high cholesterol levels, largely because it has been found very effective in reducing the levels of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol in the blood while increasing the levels of the beneficial HDL cholesterol. Several trials have supported this, including one study involving 228 patients that showed the extract to be equally as effective as the anti-cholesterol drug clofibrate.

That is not all, and other studies included one in which a decrease in LDL cholesterol of almost 13% was measured in a double blind study involving 61 subjects, of which around half received a placebo. An average 12.7% reduction in LDL cholesterol, 12% in triglycerides and 11.7% in total cholesterol was experienced by the group given the guggul extract. Every 1% drop in total cholesterol is associated with a 2% decrease in the risk of heart disease.

Guggul reduces the levels of harmful cholesterol in your blood by converting it into bile. The plant extract contains substances given the name guggulsterones that block the activity of a protein that regulates the metabolism of cholesterol in your body known as FXR (the Farsenoid X Receptor). This protein can increase the risk of you contracting heart disease by preventing the liver from converting cholesterol into bile acids, so that the concentration of cholesterol in your blood continues to build up.

The problem with bile acids is that once they reach a certain concentration in your body, the FXR comes into play and stops more being produced. Guggulsterones prevent the FXR from doing this, and so helps the liver to destroy more cholesterol. There is a reason for the body not allowing too much bile acid to be generated, but for those with excess cholesterol, it is more beneficial for this regulation to be prevented, and more cholesterol to be destroyed by the liver.

It is the resin of the plant that is prized, being extracted from the bark in much the same way as rubber is tapped. It is also used in fragrances and perfumes in addition to its medicinal uses, and the dosage generally recommended is 1500 mg (1.5 grams) twice daily. However, it is not recommended for those suffering liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease or any form of diarrhea, and should not be taken by those on beta blockers.

It is not only for its cholesterol-lowering properties that guggul is prized, however. Another property it possesses is its ability to render blood platelets less sticky, and so reduce the risk of coronary disease, and prevent the formation of blood clots and thrombosis.

Another use it has found is in the field of weight loss, where it has been found effective in reducing the weight of obese adults. It does so by the activation of lipolytic enzymes and increased levels of triiodothyronine (T3), believed to be due to the formation of T3 from T4 (thyroxine) in the liver.

T3 increases the metabolic rate, and the rate of the breakdown of glycogen and gluconeogenesis: the biosynthesis of glucose. It also causes cholesterol to be broken down and increases the rate of lipolysis - the breakdown of fats stored in fat cells in the body. Studies have shown that those taking guggul lost up to 6 times the weight of a control group within 15 days, and the practice is going along with the theory.

Not only that, but when you are on a diet, your body is likely to respond by decreasing levels of triiodothyronine, and so reducing the rate at which fat burns. Hence, your diet does not help you top reduce weight as quickly as it could. Guggul, however, stimulates the production of T3, and so you are not only taking less fat into your body, but are also burning it up at an accelerated rate.

Other uses to which the resin has been put are based upon its anti-inflammatory properties. It has been found to be an effective treatment for some forms of arthritis and also in the treatment of acne. The active inflammatory ingredient is believed to be myrrhanol A, a polypodane-type triterpene, which would also explain the antioxidant effect of guggulipid on lipid peroxidation.

Guggul is a versatile plant, and a good supplement to take for anybody suffering increased lipid or cholesterol levels, and who wants to increase the weigh-loss effect of their diet. However, make sure that you purchase a supplement standardized on its guggulipid content.

British Savers Hit Hard by Bank of England’s Decision! | Mortgage Expert

November 21st, 2008

Yesterdays announcement by the Bank of England delivered an unexpected statement that they were cutting their base rate by 1?% from 4.5% to 3%. It has been done to kick start our stalling economy and to try and prevent a deepening recession. Everyone was expecting a ?%; but, we all hoped for a full 1% interest rate cut, so this announcement was a real surprise. This interest rate cut is the largest ever percentage cut in British history; the lowest interest rate cut in 53 years and the last time we saw a full 1% interest rate cut was back in 1981.

So the question we should all be asking now is. “What does the Bank of England know that needed such drastic action?” They are normally such a cautious institute that has a history of ?% cuts and increases. We know that millions of families are struggling, unemployment is rising and will soon reach 2 million, the manufacturing industry is on its knees with the lowest sales, companies are implementing a three day week and Christmas spending is looking like a wash out. I believe they saw an economy on its knees and close to slipping into a deep recession.

The drop in interest rates were to stimulate our economy and yes it may do that; if the banks pass the interest rate cuts on in their entirety to the mortgage borrowers. A 1?% interest rate cut to a homeowner with a £100,000 mortgage would reduce their mortgage payment by £125 per month. Unfortunately this will only help borrowers on a standard variable rate, tracker or discount rate mortgage that is linked to the Bank of England base rate. It will not help anyone with a fixed rate mortgage. It is hoped that this interest rate cut will encourage us to start spending in the shops and that should get the economy moving again.

The banks need their interbank lending rate known as the Libor rate to reduce so that banks can start to borrow money from each other. The libor rate is still far too high. The banks need to reduce their libor rates so they can start offering better remortgage deals. There are millions of homeowners who are desperate to remortgage to a better rate. Homeowners looking for a new remortgage product should watch out for banks offering mortgages products with large arrangement fees. It might be better to consider a mortgage product with a higher interest rate and a lower arrangement fee; than a lower interest rate with a higher arrangement fee. Consider using a mortgage broker to find the best remortgage product to suit your circumstances that saves you real money. Latest news is that the Libor rate has just fallen by over 1% to 4.49% on the back of the Bank of England’s decision yesterday – there is hope!

The decision by the Bank of England is not welcome by everyone, especially savers and pensioners. They rely on their savings for an income to live and this interest rate cut has reduced their incomes by 33%. This will hurt savers that are pensioners more than anyone else as they live off their savings and do not have a job to support themselves. Most of these people have saved all their lives and now when they need a decent income in their retirement the Bank of England hits them the hardest.

So what is the answer? Well if we let inflation take over we will have everyone asking for bigger annual pay increases; mortgage rates will rise and the people who save money will get higher returns on their money invested. To see the consequences of a country that has been ravished by inflation you only need to look at Zimbabwe where they have major monetary problems caused through politics. Their inflation rate has risen to a staggering 100,000% and a loaf of bread now costs 16 million Zimbabwe dollars. They actually have 50, 100, 200 and 250 million dollar bank notes. A $50 million dollar bank notes is enough for three loaves of bread. Scary isn’t it!

We must hope that the Bank of England has seen something in their crystal ball and that they have taken the correct action – there will always be winners and losers. Time will tell whether the Bank of England has made the right decisions.

Bring the Mystic of the Orient to Your Living Room With Asian Home Decor

November 21st, 2008

Rooms with an Asian Twist

Each time you encounter a living room with Asian home d?cor, you are always spellbound with its refreshing charm. The d?cor never fails to enchant the senses and adding these to your suburban home will bring years of pleasure as you can always redo your home and add some eclectic touches without dumping those Asian stuff in the attic.

Asian home d?cor can complement any theme inspired home decorating because the secret of Asian d?cor is their affinity with nature, thus their versatility. By correctly matching them with your present decorations, you can create a distinctive and impeccable Asian look that is both restful and aesthetic.

Visualize your present living room. It could be just any hole in the wall. If you have a black and white minimalist room, throw in a dash of color and marvel at the transformation. Natural cane furniture, red throw silk pillows, and some green plants can immediately give your room the Asian touch. A bamboo lamp here and a plum blossom teapot on a table are a few light touches before you do the big makeover.

Decorating with Asian Touches

There are a few things to know before launching a home decorating DIY campaign in your home with Asian home d?cor. A professional interior decorator would blush if you don’t start planning your living room make-over around the foundation color. Work around the foundation colors of gold, brown, red, tan, and gray because you are redecorating to complement and compliment your existing home fixtures with pieces of Asian d?cor.

A massive and costly redo of your living room or bedroom can be avoided by starting with small pieces but always with an eye for the overall look. Pieces picked at random and plunked in the living room should not be the way to set you off with Asian home d?cor. You can start with a small carved sacred animal piece, or a big item such as intricately woven deep-seating rattan chairs, and you can add more finds that match the existing d?cor.

But do not overdo your Asian touches. Too much Asian home d?cor can turn your room into a stuffy museum instead of a relaxing living room. A few key pieces are fine. You do well by investing with an expensive Asian wall hanging to go with your cane furniture. In the bedroom, a Shoji screen can do wonders and to top it off, aluminum and glass candle holders on a teak tray will complement the look.

Simplify, Simplify and Simplify

Asian decorating your home is about simplicity, one of the key elements in beautifying your home with Asian home d?cor. Decorating the Asian way is about bringing in peace, serenity and balance to the space and this calls for the uncluttered look. You will have to get rid of the heavy stuff in the bedroom and living room to give room space to breathe. You will only have to add a few pieces and let the quality of the pieces speak for itself.

Emphasize your Asian home decor with sofa throws. But don’t forget the carved wooden box for your valuables and his men’s sterling silver bracelet. The wooden chest can be good d?cor too. Find these all at UniqueCollectiblesGift.com.
